Mont Salève Hike from Geneva: Worth It?

Mont Salève is the big green wall you see from Geneva. It's an easy, rewarding half-day hike with excellent views over the city, Lake Geneva, and the Alps. Expect a steady 2–2.5 hour climb on well-maintained but sometimes rocky paths to reach the top ridge (around 1,300m). The panorama is genuinely impressive on a clear day. Most people hike up and take the cable car down, which saves your knees and gives a nice contrast in experience. The whole trip from central Geneva takes 4–6 hours including transport.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October). June to September offers the most reliable weather, though mornings are clearer before the typical afternoon clouds roll in. Expect to pay around CHF 35–55 per person total: bus is cheap, cable car one-way is about CHF 12–15, and you’ll want a drink or snack at the top. Skip guided group tours unless you need hand-holding; this is straightforward to do independently.

Smart tip: take bus 8 from Geneva Cornavin to the base (under 45 min) and hike up the Sentier des Muletiers or Grand Parcours trail. Skip the weekends in summer if you dislike crowds. Bring water, good shoes, and a light jacket – it’s often 5–8°C cooler and windier on top than in the city.
