Casablanca Hammam: What to Expect

A traditional Moroccan hammam is a serious steam-and-scrub ritual, not a spa massage. You’ll sit in a hot, humid room while an attendant (same gender) covers you in black soap, lets you bake, then gives you a vigorous scrub with a rough kessa glove. Dead skin rolls off in gray sheets. After that comes rinsing, a quick mask, and usually a bucket of cooler water poured over your head. It’s intense, communal, and genuinely cleansing. Expect to feel a bit exposed the first time; most locals chat and laugh through it. The whole process takes 45–75 minutes.

Best time is October–April when it actually feels good to sweat. Avoid peak summer unless you enjoy 40 °C outside and 50 °C inside. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD for a proper hammam + scrub + mask in a decent local place (tourist-oriented ones in the city center or Ain Diab can charge 600–900 MAD). Skip the fancy riad versions marketed to foreigners; they’re softer and twice the price. Go for a simple neighborhood hammam instead – they’re cleaner than you fear and far more authentic.
