Visiting a Mosque in New Delhi

Expect a huge, busy 17th-century mosque with striking red sandstone architecture, large open courtyards, and constant foot traffic from worshippers and tourists. The experience is atmospheric but not peaceful: you'll climb steep steps, remove your shoes, and walk on hot marble in socks or barefoot. Women are given robes to cover up; men should have shoulders and knees covered. The call to prayer adds drama, but during Friday prayers the site is closed to non-Muslims. It's a working mosque first, tourist site second, so move respectfully and avoid photographing people praying.

Best time is early morning (before 10am) from October to March when it's cooler and less crowded. In summer it gets brutally hot on the stone floors. Expect to pay around $15-40 total per person: most people do this as part of a half-day Old Delhi tour with a guide and driver rather than going alone. Entry to the mosque itself is cheap or free, but you'll need transport, a guide who knows the etiquette, and shoe storage tips.

Pick a proper guide who explains the history without rushing you; it makes the difference between "saw a big mosque" and actually understanding it. Skip trying to visit independently if it's your first time in Old Delhi – the surrounding streets are chaotic and it's easy to get overwhelmed or overcharged. Combine it with a simple meal in the nearby market afterward, but don't over-schedule the day. One mosque is plenty.
