Should You Do a Movie Stars Homes Tour in LA?

These tours are basically a bus or van ride through Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills, where a guide points out large houses behind gates and hedges while dropping celebrity anecdotes. You'll see plenty of mansion exteriors but won't get inside or even very close—expect a lot of "that's where so-and-so lives" from a distance. The experience is equal parts Hollywood trivia, real estate porn, and sitting in traffic. It's cheesy by design and appeals most to first-timers who want the classic LA sightseeing checklist item.

Best time is spring or fall when the weather is decent and traffic isn't at its absolute worst. Summer is hotter and more crowded. Expect to pay around $60–$120 per person depending on whether you choose a basic bus tour or a smaller van with better views. Private tours jump much higher.

Pick an open-top or smaller vehicle tour if your budget allows—they're less claustrophobic and you get better photos. Skip anything promising "close-up views" or "star sightings"; those are marketing nonsense. If you're short on time or hate guided tours, just rent a car and drive Mulholland Drive yourself—it's often more enjoyable without the commentary.
