MoMA New York: Worth It?

Expect big crowds, world-class modern and contemporary art from Picasso and Van Gogh to Warhol and beyond, plus solid photography, design, and sculpture collections. The museum is large but manageable in 2–3 hours if you don’t try to see everything. It gets loud and packed on weekends and free evenings; the experience feels more like a serious art visit than a relaxing afternoon. Best time to go is weekday mornings right after opening, especially in winter or early spring when tourist numbers dip. Summer and holidays are noticeably busier and warmer inside.

Expect to pay around $25–35 for a standard adult ticket. Discounts exist for seniors, students, and people with disabilities, and entry is free for kids under 17. Skip the official audio guide unless you love slow, detailed stops; it’s better to wander and read the wall texts. One honest tip: head straight to the fifth and fourth floors first for the permanent collection while your energy is high, then check out whatever special exhibition you actually care about. If contemporary art isn’t your thing, you can comfortably skip the second floor and spend more time with the classics.
