National Palace Museum Taipei: Worth It?

The National Palace Museum holds one of the world's great collections of Chinese art and artifacts, brought from the Forbidden City decades ago. Expect a huge, somewhat dated building packed with jade carvings, bronzes, paintings, and imperial treasures. The permanent collection is the main draw; special exhibitions rotate. Most visitors spend 2–4 hours. It's air-conditioned, well-lit, and easy to navigate with English labels, but it gets crowded on weekends and during summer holidays. The surrounding park is pleasant for a short walk afterward.

Best time to visit is weekday mornings right after opening, especially in spring or late autumn when crowds are lighter and Taipei weather is comfortable. Expect to pay around NT$350–450 for a standard adult ticket; audio guides and some special exhibits cost extra. Students and seniors get discounts. Combined tickets with other sites are sometimes available but rarely worth it unless you plan to visit multiple places the same day.

Honest tips: Focus on the jade collection and the famous "Meat-Shaped Stone" on the ground floor—they're genuinely impressive and quick to see. Skip trying to read every label; the sheer volume will exhaust you. If you're not that into ceramics or bronzes, head straight to the painting and calligraphy halls on the third floor. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes—the museum is larger than it looks.
