Hiking National Parks in Liberia, Costa Rica

From Liberia you can reach two very different national park experiences in under an hour: Santa Rosa’s dry tropical forest with its historical sites and howler monkeys, or the wetter, waterfall-filled trails around Rincón de la Vieja. Expect sweaty hikes on uneven volcanic or dusty trails, decent wildlife spotting (monkeys, coatis, birds), and guides who explain the plants and history if you go with one. Santa Rosa tends to feel more open and hot; Rincón has more shade and elevation. Both are working parks, not theme parks, so facilities are basic—bring your own snacks and water.

The dry season (December to April) is easiest for hiking—trails are less muddy and wildlife gathers at water sources. June to November is greener but you’ll deal with afternoon rain and slippery paths; mornings are usually fine. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person for a half-day guided hike including transport from Liberia, depending on whether it’s shared or private and if lunch is included. Entry fees are extra if not bundled.

Pick a private or small-group hike to Santa Rosa if you like history and birds; skip the big-bus combo tours that rush both parks in one day—they’re exhausting and you see less. Always wear lightweight hiking shoes with good grip and bring bug spray for the forest sections.
