Tubing in Liberia, Costa Rica: What to Know

Tubing here usually means floating or gently bouncing down the Colorado or similar rivers near Rincón de la Vieja. Expect a mix of calm drifting through rainforest sections and a few small rapids that give mild splashes and giggles rather than white-knuckle thrills. Tours last 1.5–4 hours on the water depending on the package; most include basic safety briefing, life jacket, helmet, and a guide who paddles ahead or rides with the group. The scenery is genuinely pretty – volcanic hills, hanging vines, and the chance to spot toucans or howler monkeys – but it’s not remote wilderness. You’ll share the river with other tour groups in high season.

Best time is December to April when the rivers run clearer and water levels are safer for tubing. Rainy season (May–Nov) can make currents stronger and trips bumpier or sometimes cancelled. Expect to pay around $60–95 per person for a half-day trip including transport from Liberia, gear, and a simple lunch or fruit stop; full-day combos with a waterfall hike run $110–160. Private tours cost more.

Pick the shorter morning trips if you want calmer water and fewer groups; skip the add-on “adrenaline” packages that just mean a longer bus ride with one bigger rapid. Bring water shoes that stay on – flip-flops get lost fast – and pack a dry bag for your phone.
