Vienna’s night markets are mostly Christmas markets that open from mid-November until just before Christmas. Expect a festive but crowded experience: wooden stalls selling mulled wine, sausages, handmade ornaments, and sweets under strings of lights. The bigger ones (especially around Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn) get very busy after 6pm with both tourists and locals. It’s atmospheric if you like that sort of thing, but it can feel more like a theme park than an authentic local night out once the crowds really pack in. In summer there are smaller food-focused night markets, but they’re less iconic and usually wrap up earlier.

Expect to pay around €25–45 per person for a relaxed visit — that covers a mug of mulled wine or punch, a couple of snacks like käsekrainer or langos, and maybe a small purchase. Guided evening tours that include transport or a boat ride push the price closer to €90–110. Best time is early December on a weekday evening; weekends are noticeably more chaotic. One honest tip: pick the hot chestnut stands and any stall grilling fresh sausages — they’re reliable and tasty. Skip the mass-produced gingerbread and most “artisanal” souvenirs unless you actually want a keepsake; they’re usually overpriced and average quality.
