Expect a bumpy, dusty, caravan-style ride through dirt tracks, palm groves, and a few shallow river crossings. Most tours last 2–4 hours and include a stop at a cenote or cave for swimming. It’s fun if you like driving yourself, but it’s not a solitary wilderness trip — you’ll be in a convoy of 10–20 buggies with constant guide radio chatter. The “off-road” part is real: you’ll get covered in red dust and probably laugh a lot, but it can feel touristy and noisy rather than adventurous.
Best time is December to April when the weather is driest and the tracks are less muddy. Rainy season (May–November) turns the trails into slippery soup and cancellations are common. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a half-day tour including hotel pickup, guide, and basic equipment. Private buggies or longer trips push toward the higher end.
Tip: Choose the smaller “private buggy” option if it’s offered — far better than the big convoy. Skip any tour that adds a long zipline or “VIP beach club” stop; those are just padding to justify the price. Wear closed shoes, bring a bandana for your face, and don’t forget a waterproof bag for your phone.
