Expect a relaxed but surprisingly good workout. Most beginner lessons last 90 minutes to two hours: 20–30 minutes on the beach learning how to stand, hold the paddle, and fall properly, then the rest on the water. In Los Angeles you’ll usually paddle in protected spots like Marina del Rey, Venice canals, or calmer sections near Santa Monica. The experience is social and low-pressure — instructors keep groups small. You’ll get wet, you’ll probably fall in at least once, and you’ll leave with a solid sense of whether you actually enjoy it.
The best time is late spring through early fall (May–October). Summer mornings are ideal: flatter water, warmer air, and fewer crowds if you book the first slot. Winter can work but expect colder water, windier conditions, and the occasional canceled lesson. Expect to pay around $85–$130 for a first-timer group lesson including board, paddle, and wetsuit. Private lessons run $150–$220.
Pick a morning lesson in a protected harbor or bay rather than open ocean if it’s your first time. Skip sunset tours unless you’re already comfortable on the board — beautiful but harder to see what you’re doing when the light drops. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes; everything else is provided.
