A full-day Palenque tour takes you about an hour outside Cartagena to San Basilio de Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas. Expect a mix of history lesson and cultural immersion: you'll hear about its maroon founders, see traditional houses, visit the central plaza, and usually get some live drumming and palenquero language demonstrations. Most tours include a local lunch (often fish, plantains, and coconut rice) plus a shot of rum. It's educational without being stuffy, but be prepared for a long day in the car and fairly basic facilities once you're there.
The dry season from December to April is best; roads get messy and tours sometimes cancel during heavy rains. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on whether you go in a small group or private tour. Private is noticeably better if you can split the cost with friends.
Tip: choose a tour with a native Palenquero guide if possible; they add authenticity the big-bus versions often lack. Skip the ones that add on a rum tasting factory at the end; it's just a tourist trap that eats into your village time.
