Horse Carriage Rides in Cartagena: Worth It?

A horse-drawn carriage ride through Cartagena's old walled city feels like stepping back in time, but it's hotter, slower, and more touristy than most people imagine. You'll clip-clop past colonial balconies, plazas, and churches for about 45-60 minutes while the driver points out landmarks. Expect plenty of photo ops, but also traffic fumes, uneven cobblestones that make the ride bumpy, and horses that look like they've done this loop a thousand times. It's romantic at night when the city lights are on; during the day it can feel more like a slow-moving traffic jam with a view.

Best time is December to February when temperatures are slightly lower and humidity isn't crushing. Avoid midday in the hotter months (April-October) unless you enjoy sweating in an open carriage. Expect to pay around $35-65 for a private 45-60 minute ride depending on negotiation, group size, and time of day; longer tours with stops push higher. Night rides usually cost more but are genuinely nicer.

Tip: Choose a carriage with a driver who speaks decent English if you want actual history instead of vague gestures. Skip the ones parked right at the main gates—they're often the most aggressive and overpriced. Walk a block or two and compare a few first. Bring water and don't be afraid to haggle.
