Expect a slow, interesting half-day on the water. Most trips are partial transits: you board a bus from Panama City (about 45 minutes) to Gamboa, then ride a medium-sized boat through the first set of locks and along part of the canal. It's not the full ocean-to-ocean journey but you do pass massive cargo ships up close, watch the lock system work, and get decent views of the rainforest edges. The pace is leisurely – bring sun protection, a hat, and patience. Lunch is usually included and it's generally decent.
Best time is December to April during the dry season when rain is minimal and the water is calmer. Expect to pay around $150–$250 per person depending on group size, whether it's a small boat or larger vessel, and what's included. Smaller boats (under 20 people) give you better views and photos but can feel the wake more.
Pick a morning departure so you're not baking in the afternoon sun and you finish with daylight left. Skip the full-day "complete" transits unless you have 10+ hours to spare – they're exhausting and the extra time mostly adds more lake cruising with diminishing returns. Bring binoculars if you have them; the big ships are impressive but the wildlife is better seen up close with magnification.
