Monkey Island Boat Tour from Panama City

Expect a half-day boat trip on Gatun Lake in the middle of the Panama Canal. You'll motor past huge container ships, then head into quieter channels where howler, capuchin, and tamarin monkeys swing through the trees, often coming close to the boat looking for handouts. Guides point out sloths, iguanas, and birds along the way. It's genuinely fun if you like wildlife, but it's a guided tour experience – not a pristine jungle trek. The boats are usually covered, with seating for 10-20 people. The whole thing takes 3-5 hours including pickup and drop-off from Panama City.

Best time is December to April during the dry season when rain is less likely and animals are more active. Expect to pay around $60-110 per person depending on group size and whether it includes lunch or a partial canal transit. Private tours or smaller boats sit at the higher end.

Pick an afternoon departure if you want fewer crowds and better light for photos. Skip the add-on "canal expansion" viewpoint if you're short on time – it's usually underwhelming. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, and your own snacks; the monkeys are cute but the tour operators feed them, which isn't ideal for the animals long-term.
