Paragliding in Cape Town: What You Need to Know

Expect a surprisingly smooth and peaceful experience rather than an adrenaline rush. After a short briefing you clip in with an experienced pilot and run a few steps off Lion’s Head or Signal Hill. Within seconds you’re floating 500–800 m above Cape Town with Table Mountain on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Flights usually last 15–25 minutes depending on conditions; thermals can give you longer rides, while strong wind days end quicker. Landings are normally soft on grass or sand at the base. It’s genuinely one of the more scenic tandem flights in the world, but it’s still a weather-dependent activity – you may wait or get rescheduled.

Best time is November to April when the wind is most reliable and the weather is warmer. December and January are peak tourist season so book ahead; shoulder months (Oct, May) can be cheaper and less crowded. Expect to pay around $130–$190 for a standard 20-minute tandem flight including pickup from the city. Add-ons like photos or longer scenic flights push it toward the higher end.

Pick a morning flight if possible – the air is calmer and the light is better. Skip trying to do both Lion’s Head and Signal Hill in one trip; one good flight is enough. If the pilot says conditions aren’t safe, trust them and reschedule. The difference between an average and excellent flight here is almost entirely down to the weather and pilot’s judgment, not the company you choose.
