Phoenix Beach Snorkeling in Aruba: Worth It?

Phoenix Beach offers easy shore snorkeling with decent reefs starting just 50-80 yards from the sand. You'll see parrotfish, sergeant majors, occasional turtles, and small rays over a mix of live coral and rocky areas. Visibility is usually good (30-60 ft) but drops after heavy rain or rough seas. The experience is relaxed rather than spectacular; it's perfect if you want to snorkel without booking a boat, though fish variety and coral health are average compared to Aruba's better sites. Expect a pleasant 45-90 minutes in the water before the novelty wears off.

Best time is April through October when seas are calmer and visibility peaks. Avoid January-March when trade winds make the water choppy and stir up sand. Expect to pay around $25-45 for basic gear rental (mask, snorkel, fins) from beach vendors; guided group tours run $55-85 per person including equipment and brief instruction. Life vests are available but not required for strong swimmers.

Tip: rent gear only if you're staying at or near the Phoenix resort—otherwise bring your own or skip the upsell. The calm morning hours (before 11am) are noticeably better than afternoon when winds pick up. Skip the crowded catamaran tours that stop here briefly; the beach snorkel is more enjoyable on your own schedule.
