A private junk charter gets you a whole boat for the day with a captain, usually carrying 8–20 people. You cruise out of Aberdeen or Sai Kung, drop anchor in a sheltered bay, swim, eat, drink, and nap. Expect basic facilities: a simple toilet, shaded areas, and a big open deck. The crew handles navigation and often cooks a seafood lunch if you add it. It’s relaxed rather than luxurious – think floating picnic rather than yacht party. Bring your own drinks, snacks, towels, and reef-safe sunscreen.
Best time is October to early December when the weather is sunny, the water is clearest, and typhoon risk is low. April–May can also work but gets humid; avoid June–September because of heat, rain, and frequent storm cancellations. Expect to pay around HKD 6,000–12,000 for a half-day boat for up to 12 people, or HKD 9,000–18,000 for a full day including fuel. Food and drinks are extra.
Pick a weekday if you can – weekends are crowded and more expensive. Choose a boat with a decent swimming platform and ladder; some older junks have terrible access. Skip the add-on “BBQ package” unless you really want it – it’s often overpriced and mediocre. Bring a portable Bluetooth speaker and a cooler of your own drinks instead.
