Tai O is a small stilt-house fishing village on Lantau Island that still feels like old Hong Kong. A typical visit involves wandering the narrow alleys, watching locals dry salted fish and shrimp paste, then hopping on a small local boat for a 15-20 minute spin through the mangroves and around the back of the village. You'll usually spot a few pink dolphins if conditions are right, see the old police station, and get views of the houses built over water. It's low-key, slightly touristy but not overwhelming, and gives a quick taste of traditional life without needing a full day.
Best time is October to March when it's cooler and drier; summer brings heat, humidity and occasional typhoons that cancel boat trips. Expect to pay around HK$150-350 per person depending on whether you do just the boat ride from the village or combine it with transport and a guide from central Hong Kong. Independent travelers can simply take the bus to Tai O and buy boat tickets on the spot.
Tip: always choose the boat tour that goes through the narrow waterways behind the houses rather than the big open-sea dolphin-only version. Skip the overpriced seafood restaurants near the bus stop; grab egg waffles or simple noodles from the small stalls instead. Go early in the day before tour groups arrive if you want clearer photos and fewer crowds.
