Star Ferry Crossing in Hong Kong: Worth It?

The Star Ferry is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable ways to cross Victoria Harbour. The ride itself lasts about 10 minutes and gives you a close-up view of the skyscrapers on both sides. Expect a simple, no-frills experience: wooden benches, open windows, and the smell of seawater. Daytime crossings show the full scale of the city; nighttime runs turn the skyline into a wall of neon and lights. It gets crowded during rush hours with locals, but tourists usually head to the upper deck for photos. The terminals are straightforward — just buy a ticket from the machine or counter and walk on.

Best time is late afternoon through early evening, especially between October and March when the humidity drops and the air is clearer. Summer crossings can be hot and hazy. Expect to pay around HKD 5–12 per person depending on whether you choose lower or upper deck and if you travel on a weekend. The round-trip is cheap enough that you can do it both ways without thinking twice.

Tip: take the ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central in the early evening, then catch the return after dark — you get both the daytime city views and the illuminated skyline without paying for any overpriced "harbour tour" boat. Skip the souvenir photo sellers on the pier; the views from the deck are better than anything they offer.
