A private wine tour from Nice typically means a driver-guide picks you up at your hotel and takes you into the hills behind the city or over to the Var or Bellet appellations. You’ll visit two or three small producers, taste four to six wines (mostly rosé, some interesting reds and whites), and get a basic cheese or charcuterie plate. The pace is relaxed; you’re not rushed, and the winemakers usually explain the wines themselves. Expect beautiful Provençal scenery, winding roads, and a fair amount of time in the car. It’s genuinely pleasant if you like wine and don’t want to drive yourself.
The best time is April–June or September–early October. July and August are hot, crowded, and many winemakers are stretched thin. Shoulder seasons give you better weather for tasting outside and more attentive hosts. Expect to pay around €450–€750 for two people for a half-day private tour with transport and tastings; full-day tours with lunch run €650–€950. Prices vary mostly by vehicle type and how premium the wineries are.
Tip: Choose a tour that visits Bellet if possible – it’s the only AOC inside Nice itself and the wines are genuinely different from the usual Provence stuff. Skip anything that promises “six wineries in four hours” – you’ll spend the day driving and barely taste anything properly. Book a morning departure so you’re back in Nice before the afternoon heat or traffic kicks in.
