A quad bike tour from Marrakesh usually means leaving the medina behind and heading into the rocky, dusty Agafay desert or nearby rural palmeries. Expect a 45–90 minute ride on automatic ATVs that are surprisingly easy to handle even if you’ve never ridden before. The terrain is a mix of dirt tracks, sand patches and small hills; it feels adventurous but not extreme. Most trips include a short stop for tea and photos, and longer versions add camel rides or a desert dinner with music. It’s fun and gets you out of the city heat and crowds, but it’s not a wilderness experience — you’ll still see other groups and occasional power lines.
The best time is spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November) when it’s warm but not brutally hot. Summer rides are possible but exhausting in 40°C+ desert heat. Expect to pay around $45–90 per person for a half-day excursion including pickup from your riad; full-day versions with dinner run $110–160. Private tours cost more but avoid the large groups.
Pick a morning departure so you ride when it’s cooler and the light is better for photos. Skip the add-on camel ride if you’ve done one before — they’re usually short and touristy. Wear closed shoes, long trousers, and bring a scarf or buff for the dust. If you’re a confident rider, ask to lead the convoy; otherwise you’ll eat everyone else’s dust the whole way.
