Recoleta Walking Tour: Worth It?

A Recoleta walking tour is one of the better ways to get your bearings in Buenos Aires' wealthiest and most European-looking neighborhood. Expect two to three hours of gentle strolling past French-style mansions, pretty parks, and the famous Recoleta Cemetery. The cemetery is the undeniable highlight: a maze of elaborate marble mausoleums where Eva Perón is buried. Guides usually mix architecture, local history, and a bit of gossip about Argentina's old elite. It's easy-paced, mostly flat, and suitable for most fitness levels, though the cemetery itself has uneven cobblestones and stairs.

The best time to go is spring (October–December) or fall (March–May) when the weather is mild and the jacaranda trees look spectacular. Summer can be brutally hot and humid; winter is chilly but still doable. Expect to pay around $25–70 per person depending on whether it's a small-group tour with a proper guide or a larger tip-based “free” tour. Private tours cost significantly more.

Pick the version that includes both the cemetery and a walk through the surrounding streets and plazas. Skip the ones that spend more than 75 minutes inside the cemetery itself; after a while the tombs all start to look the same. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and go early in the day before the crowds and heat build up.
