Red Fort Delhi: Worth Visiting?

The Red Fort is a massive 17th-century Mughal stronghold right in Old Delhi. Expect high red sandstone walls, impressive gateways, and a large courtyard complex with marble pavilions, a small museum, and gardens. It’s atmospheric but can feel crowded and a bit repetitive if you’ve already seen Agra Fort or other Mughal sites. The sound-and-light show in the evening is popular with locals but fairly touristy and not essential. Give yourself 90 minutes to two hours; it’s a solid half-day when combined with nearby Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk street food.

Best time to visit is October to March when Delhi weather is coolest and most comfortable. Avoid summer (April–June) unless you enjoy 40°C+ heat, and steer clear of weekends and Indian public holidays when it gets packed with domestic tourists. Expect to pay around $5–10 for a foreigner ticket including the museum and light show; Indians pay far less. Audio guides or basic guides at the entrance are available but not necessary.

Tip: Go early in the morning right after opening to beat the crowds and heat. Skip the overpriced souvenir shops inside and instead walk out through Chandni Chowk for better street snacks. If you’re short on time or energy, it’s fine to skip the Red Fort entirely—many travelers get more out of just wandering the surrounding old city.
