Should You Visit Red Fort in Delhi?

The Red Fort is a massive 17th-century Mughal stronghold that once housed emperors. Expect high red sandstone walls, marble pavilions, gardens, and a large courtyard where sound-and-light shows run in the evenings. The site is atmospheric but can feel crowded and repetitive if you've already seen other Mughal sites like Agra Fort. It's worth visiting if you're into history and architecture; otherwise you can skip it and use the time for Old Delhi street food or a market wander instead.

Best time is October to March when temperatures are tolerable. Avoid summer (April-June) unless you enjoy 40°C heat, and steer clear of weekends and national holidays when it gets packed with local visitors. Entry and a basic guided walk will set you back around $8–15 total per person. A half-day guided tour that includes the fort plus a couple of other Old Delhi sights usually runs $40–70 depending on group size and transport.

One solid tip: hire a licensed guide at the entrance or join a small group tour – the signage is minimal and the stories behind each building make the visit far more interesting. Skip the overpriced souvenir shops inside and the evening light show unless you're really into dramatic narration; both add little to the core experience.
