From Nadi you’ll usually take a boat 45–90 minutes to the Mamanuca or Yasawa islands for reef snorkeling. Expect warm, clear water, healthy soft corals, and lots of tropical fish. The reefs are pretty but not untouched—popular sites see quite a few boats. Visibility is typically good (15–30m), though it drops after heavy rain. The trip usually includes snorkel gear, lunch, and a few stops. It’s a solid half-day to full-day activity, but it’s more “nice day on the water with snorkeling” than pristine wilderness experience.
The best time is the dry season from May to October when seas are calmer and visibility is best. December to March brings warmer water but higher chance of rain, wind, and poorer visibility. Expect to pay around $120–$220 per person depending on whether you choose a small-group tour, a bigger catamaran trip, or add-ons like a second reef or village visit. Private charters are significantly more.
Tip: Choose a smaller operator that visits 2–3 different reefs rather than the big boats that anchor at the same spot with 40+ people. Skip the “swim with sharks” add-ons if you just want relaxed reef snorkeling—they’re usually in a different, busier area and not worth the hype for most people. Bring your own mask if you have one that fits well; rental gear is average.
