Munich Residenz Tour: Worth It?

The Residenz is a sprawling former royal palace in central Munich packed with lavish rooms, frescoed ceilings, ornate furniture, and a serious treasury of jewels and gold. A typical guided tour lasts 2–2.5 hours and covers the main palace highlights plus the Treasury; on your own you can wander the Residence Museum and Treasury in about 90–120 minutes if you move briskly. Expect crowds in the most famous rooms (Antiquarium, Reiche Zimmer) and a fair amount of stairs and polished floors. It feels grand but not overwhelmingly huge compared with Versailles.

Best time is shoulder season (April–May or September–October) when lines are shorter and the palace isn’t baking hot. In summer it gets busy after 11 am; arrive at opening (usually 9 or 10) if you dislike crowds. Expect to pay around €25–45 per person total: individual tickets run about €10–15 each for museum and treasury, while a guided small-group tour with skip-the-line access sits in the €35–50 range including entry.

Honest tip: book the combined ticket and do the Treasury first – it’s compact, dazzling, and far less crowded early in the day. Skip the audio guide if you’re on a tight schedule; the rooms are well-labeled and you’ll see more without headphones glued to your ears. If you’re short on time or not into decorative arts, just walk the exterior courtyards for free instead.
