Rowing on the Estanque Grande is one of the simplest pleasures in Retiro Park. You get a clunky rowboat for 30-45 minutes, paddle around a large artificial lake surrounded by trees and the looming Monument to Alfonso XII. Expect a relaxed, low-key experience rather than anything thrilling. The boats are old but maintained, life vests are available, and the water is calm. It's popular with families, couples, and groups of friends. On busy days you'll be sharing the water with dozens of other boats, which adds to the cheerful chaos but kills any hope of a peaceful glide.
Best time is spring or early autumn on a weekday morning; you avoid the worst crowds and the summer heat that makes rowing feel like work. In July and August it gets uncomfortably hot and the wait can be long. Expect to pay around €6-9 per boat for a standard 30-45 minute slot, with slightly higher rates on weekends and holidays. Cash is usually preferred.
Tip: Skip the swan-shaped pedal boats if available — they're slower and less fun. Grab a regular rowing boat instead and head toward the far end of the lake away from the monument for a bit more space. Go early if you want to avoid the long queue that forms after 11am.
