Thyssen Museum: Worth It?

The Thyssen is the most manageable of Madrid’s big three art museums. Expect a calm, well-lit building with a genuinely wide-ranging collection that jumps from medieval altarpieces and German Renaissance portraits to Impressionists, early 20th-century Americans, and pop art. You can see the whole place properly in 90–120 minutes without feeling rushed. It’s never as crowded as the Prado, even in peak season, so you get breathing room in front of the pictures. The audio guide is decent if you want context; many people just wander with the free floor plan and enjoy it perfectly well.

Best time is October–April on a weekday morning. Summer afternoons can get warm inside and the queues for security lengthen. Expect to pay around €13–18 for a standard ticket; guided tours with skip-the-line push that to roughly €45–60 depending on group size and language. The permanent collection is the main reason to go – the temporary exhibitions are hit-and-miss and often require a separate ticket.

Honest tip: skip the basement if you’re short on time or energy; the real hits are on the main and first floors. Pair it with the Prado on the same day only if you buy the combined ticket and start at the Thyssen – the flow and mood are far gentler and you’ll finish fresher.
