Should You Tour Madrid's Royal Palace?

The Royal Palace of Madrid is a working royal residence that's open to visitors, packed with opulent rooms, frescoed ceilings, tapestries, armor, and paintings by Goya and others. Expect a lot of walking on marble floors through about 20-25 lavishly decorated spaces. A standard self-guided visit takes 60-90 minutes; guided tours last around two hours and give context that makes the endless succession of throne rooms and salons far more interesting. The scale is impressive but it can feel crowded and echoey inside, especially in peak season. It's best in spring or fall when temperatures are mild and crowds thinner; summer gets hot and busy, winter can be cold in the unheated sections.

Expect to pay around €20-30 per person total. Basic entry is the lower end; adding a decent guided tour or combo ticket with another site pushes it toward the higher figure. One honest tip: book a morning guided tour with skip-the-line access if you dislike waiting in long queues outside. Skip the optional Royal Kitchen tour unless you're really into historic crockery and copper pots — it's interesting for ten minutes but not worth the extra time or cost for most travelers. Wear comfortable shoes and go early to enjoy it before the daily tour groups fill the halls.
