Should You Stay in a Riad in Marrakesh?

A riad stay puts you inside a traditional Moroccan courtyard house, usually built around a central fountain or small pool. Expect thick walls that keep things cool, rooftop terraces for breakfast or sunset drinks, and a quiet, self-contained feel even though you're often steps from the chaos of the medina. Rooms are atmospheric but can be dark; bathrooms are frequently compact. Service is personal—staff remember your name and preferences—but it’s not the same as a full-service hotel. Noise from neighboring houses or the call to prayer is normal. It’s an immersive experience that feels more like staying in someone’s elegant home than a resort.

The best time is March to May or September to early November when temperatures are pleasant for exploring on foot. Summer is brutally hot and winter nights can be surprisingly cold. Expect to pay around $90–$220 per night for a decent riad with good reviews; under $80 often means very basic facilities or poor location, while $300+ buys luxury and a private plunge pool. Book at least a month ahead in peak season.

Pick a riad inside the medina but not directly on a busy souk route if you want to sleep. Skip the ones that advertise “five-star” service unless you’re paying for true luxury—most are charming but run at a more relaxed pace. Always confirm they have reliable hot water and decent Wi-Fi if those matter to you.
