Riad Dinner in Marrakesh: Worth It?

A riad dinner means eating in a restored traditional house built around an open courtyard, usually with live music, candles, and multiple courses of Moroccan food served family-style or in tagines. Expect slow service, lots of bread and salads, followed by main dishes like chicken with preserved lemon, lamb tagine, or couscous. Some places add a belly dancer or Gnawa musicians; others keep it quiet. It's atmospheric but can feel touristy if the room fills with large groups. The whole thing typically lasts 2-3 hours including any show.

Best time is spring (March-May) or autumn (Sept-Nov) when it's not freezing at night or brutally hot. Evenings are pleasant for sitting in the courtyard. Budget-wise, expect to pay around 500-900 MAD per person including transport from your hotel, dinner, and the entertainment. Drinks are usually extra.

Pick places that serve good mechoui (roast lamb) if it's on offer and always try the pastilla. Skip the set "royal" menus that look like they've been copied for 20 years - they're rarely worth the upcharge. Go with an open mind about the entertainment; it's part of the package but the food is what actually matters.
