Expect an early wake-up call around 4-5am for pickup from your riad. After a drive to the launch site you’ll climb into a large basket with 10-20 other people and drift silently over palm groves, red-brown villages, and the edges of the desert with the Atlas Mountains in the distance. Flights last about 45-60 minutes; you finish with a basic Berber breakfast in a tent. It’s peaceful rather than thrilling – more float than adventure. Wind and weather can cancel flights with little notice, so build flexibility into your plans.
The best time is October to April when mornings are cooler and clearer. Summer flights exist but start even earlier to beat the heat and turbulence is more likely. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person depending on whether you choose the basic flight or the version that adds camel rides and a longer breakfast experience. Book directly through your hotel or a big platform rather than random street sellers.
Tip: Skip the add-on camel ride if you’re short on time or already planning a proper desert trip – it’s short and touristy. Go for the earliest available departure; you’ll get better light and calmer air. If you hate heights or early starts, this one is easy to skip.
