Hammam in Marrakesh: What to Know

A Marrakesh hammam is a steam-based scrub and wash that feels like a cross between a sauna, Turkish bath, and serious exfoliation session. You enter a series of warm, tiled rooms, get doused with buckets of warm water, then scrubbed hard with a rough glove (kessa) that removes surprising amounts of dead skin. Most places follow with a soap massage using black olive soap, a rinse, and sometimes a mask or oil. It's genuinely relaxing once the vigorous scrubbing part is over, but first-timers are often shocked by how physical it is. Expect to be naked or in disposable underwear among other women or men depending on the schedule.

Best time to go is November to March when it's cooler outside; the contrast feels amazing and the places are less crowded. Expect to pay around 250-450 dirhams for a decent traditional hammam with scrub and massage – the very basic local ones can be cheaper, the fancy riad spas significantly more. Skip the add-on facial or argan oil upgrades unless you really want them; the core hammam experience is what matters.

Tip: choose a women-only or men-only session if you're modest – mixed times can feel awkward. Bring your own underwear to change into afterward; most places provide everything else but the experience is better when you're not worrying about disposable paper knickers. Go once, enjoy the ritual, then move on to the next Marrakesh activity.
