Hammam & Spa in Marrakesh: What to Know

A traditional Marrakech hammam is a no-frills steam-and-scrub ritual that leaves your skin feeling brand new. Expect to be led into a series of warm, tiled rooms where you sweat, get covered in black soap, then vigorously scrubbed with a rough mitt until grey rolls of dead skin come off. It’s not a quiet massage spa; it’s communal, steamy, sometimes noisy, and very thorough. Most places finish with a rinse, optional argan oil massage, and mint tea. The whole thing usually takes 60–90 minutes. It’s genuinely refreshing after dusty days in the medina but can feel intense if you’re modest or sensitive to heat.

Go between October and April when it’s cooler outside; the contrast feels luxurious and you won’t leave the hammam already sweating. Expect to pay around $25–45 for a basic hammam + scrub at a decent local place, $60–110 if you want a proper massage and fancier facilities. Skip the ultra-luxury riad spas if you want the authentic experience; they’re often diluted versions aimed at tourists. Pick a mid-range traditional hammam instead, and always choose the “gommage” (scrub) add-on. Bring your own underwear or bikini if you’re shy; many places provide disposable paper ones that feel ridiculous.
