Rijksmuseum Tickets: Worth It?

Expect a huge, beautiful building packed with 800 years of Dutch art, with Rembrandt’s Night Watch as the undisputed star. The museum gets very busy, especially around the main paintings on the second floor. You’ll spend at least two hours if you want to see the highlights properly; four if you like to linger. The experience is calm and spacious once you’re past the entrance hall, but it never feels empty. Audio guides are decent and easy to use; live guided tours move at a steady pace and give decent context without being overwhelming.

Best time is November–March on a weekday morning; you’ll avoid the worst crowds and the summer heat. In peak season (April–August) it can feel like a conveyor belt around the big canvases. Expect to pay around €22–28 for a standard ticket. Adding a 1.5–2 hour small-group tour pushes it to roughly €55–75 per person. Skip the big Rembrandt-only add-ons and the evening “after hours” events unless you specifically want fewer people; the regular daytime ticket gives you everything that matters.
