Swimming in Zurich's rivers, mainly the Limmat and Sihl, is a classic local summer experience. You jump in at designated spots and let the current carry you downstream through the city, passing parks, bridges, and waterfront cafes. The water is clean, cold, and fast-moving. Expect to share the river with hundreds of locals on warm days; it's social, refreshing, and surprisingly efficient as urban transport. Most people float in swimwear or clothes, using a waterproof bag or buoy for belongings. It's free to do on your own, though you can join small guided floats that provide gear and safety briefings.
The best time is July and August when water temperatures reach 20-24°C and air temperatures are reliably warm. June and September can work but expect cooler water. Avoid spring and autumn unless you're hardy. Expect to pay around CHF 0-50: nothing if you go independently with your own towel and bag, up to about 50 francs for a guided half-day float that includes equipment, transport, and a drink.
Pick a popular entry point near the city center with easy exit stairs downstream. Skip swimming after heavy rain when currents strengthen and visibility drops. Bring old sneakers or water shoes if you're worried about the riverbed, and never swim alone or after drinking.
