Zurich’s bathhouses (Badeanstalten) are a mix of serious swimming, social scene, and old-school Swiss practicality. Expect wooden decks over the lake, cold clear water straight from the Limmat or lake, and a very Swiss lack of fuss. Most are segregated by gender at certain times or fully; some are mixed and clothing-optional. You’ll see everyone from retirees doing laps to young locals sunbathing naked. Facilities are clean but simple – bring your own towel or rent one. The vibe is calm and confident; nobody is there to impress you.
Best time is June through early September when the water is warmest (18–22°C) and the sun actually appears. Early morning or right after lunch on weekdays is ideal – fewer crowds and you avoid the loud after-work scene. Expect to pay around CHF 8–18 for a regular day ticket depending on the location and whether you want a sunbed or locker. Private changing cabins or a massage will push it toward the higher end.
Pick the women-only or men-only historic ones if you want the classic Zurich experience and don’t feel like dealing with mixed crowds. Skip the big modern outdoor pools if you actually want to swim laps; they get packed with families and loud teenagers. Bring flip-flops – the wooden decks get hot and slippery.
