Yacht Rental in Zurich: What to Know

Renting a yacht or motorboat on Lake Zurich is straightforward but not exactly cheap. Expect a comfortable, relaxed day on the water with decent views of the Alps on clear days. Boats range from small 4–6 person runabouts to larger yachts that can carry 10–12 with a skipper. Most rentals include basic navigation; you can self-drive the smaller ones if you have a boating license (international ones are often accepted). The experience is calm rather than flashy – think drinks on deck, swimming stops, and watching Zürich's shoreline slide by. It's genuinely pleasant on sunny days but can feel overpriced if the weather turns gray.

Best time is June through early September when the water is warmest and days are longest. May and late September can work but expect cooler evenings. Winter is pointless unless you just want to cruise in the cold. Expect to pay around CHF 800–2,000 for a half-day rental depending on boat size and whether you need a captain. Full-day charters usually run CHF 1,800–4,500. Fuel is normally extra.

Tip: Pick a boat with a skipper unless you're an experienced driver – it removes stress and lets you actually enjoy the lake. Skip the cheapest no-name operators; the slightly higher-end ones tend to have better-maintained vessels and clearer cancellation policies. Bring your own food and drinks – the markup on board is painful.
