Expect a relaxed, slightly adventurous experience rather than an organized tour. You jump into the clear, fast-moving Limmat River downtown, float with the current for 2–3 hours past bridges, parks, and city buildings, then climb out at a designated exit point. The water is clean and cold even in summer. It's a very local thing — you'll be sharing the river with Swiss families, students, and office workers on their lunch break. No life jackets, no guides shouting instructions, just you, a waterproof bag, and the current.
The best time is July and August when the water temperature is most comfortable (around 18–22°C). June and September are possible but noticeably colder. Avoid after heavy rain when the current gets stronger and the water murkier. Expect to pay around CHF 0 for the basic jump-and-float version up to around CHF 130–180 if you join a small guided group that provides a dry bag, quick safety briefing, and pickup at the end.
Pick the simple self-guided float from Flussbad Oberer Letten if you’re comfortable in water and want the authentic local experience — it’s free and easy. Skip the expensive “adventure” packages unless you really want hand-holding; the river does most of the work. Always check the official water quality report and current strength before jumping in.
