River Tubing in Liberia, Costa Rica: What to Know

River tubing near Liberia is a relaxed float down shallow, rocky rivers that wind through tropical dry forest. Most trips last 1.5–2 hours and cover about 4 km with a mix of gentle drifts, a few small rapids, and the occasional splash. You’ll bounce over rocks in an inflatable tube while guides steer you clear of trouble. The water is usually warm, the scenery is pleasant but not dramatic, and many tours stop at a small waterfall or natural hot springs afterward. It’s family-friendly (minimum age is typically 5) and far calmer than whitewater rafting. Don’t expect wilderness solitude — these are popular half-day outings that often include transport from Liberia hotels.

The dry season (December to April) is best because the water is clearer and the level is lower, making the float more relaxing. In the wet season the river can run faster and murkier, which some people enjoy for the extra splash but others find less comfortable. Expect to pay around $50–85 per person including equipment, guide, snacks or lunch, and round-trip transport from Liberia. Private tours or combos with waterfall hikes cost more.

Pick a morning departure so you’re not baking in the afternoon sun, and choose the standard river tubing tour rather than any “adrenaline” version — the river simply isn’t big enough for real thrills. Skip the full-day packages if you just want the tubing; the extra hiking or horseback bits are rarely worth the added time and money in this area.
