Should You Do a Royal Palace Tour in Seoul?

A typical royal palace tour in Seoul focuses on the grand Joseon-era palaces, mainly Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. Expect 4–7 hours on your feet with a guide explaining history, architecture, and royal life. The experience is mostly walking between gates, courtyards, and throne halls while learning about kings, queens, and court intrigue. Tours move at a steady pace; you'll see changing of the guard performances at Gyeongbokgung if timed right. It's educational and photogenic but can feel repetitive if you're not into history. Most people leave feeling they've properly "done" Seoul's palaces without needing to research everything themselves.

The best time is spring (late March–April) for cherry blossoms or autumn (October–early November) for colorful foliage. Avoid summer afternoons when it gets hot and humid, and note that winter tours are colder but the palaces look striking with snow. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person depending on whether it's a small-group tour with transport or a basic half-day option. Private tours push toward the higher end.

Pick the full-day version that includes both Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung plus the Secret Garden (Huwon) — it's the most satisfying combo. Skip the add-on hanbok rental unless you really want photos; it slows the group down and the costumes get repetitive fast in photos. Wear comfortable shoes — you'll walk more than you expect.
