A San Blas day trip from Panama City is long (10–12 hours door-to-door) and mostly spent in a van and boat, but the reward is genuinely beautiful islands, clear water, and a very different vibe from the city. Overnight tours are better if you want to actually relax. Expect basic wooden cabins or tents on stilts over the water, shared or simple private bathrooms, excellent snorkeling right off the beach, and meals of fresh fish, rice, and plantains cooked by Kuna families. The water is usually calm and turquoise, though it can get choppy on the boat ride out. It's not luxury — it's simple, hot, and very beautiful.
Best time is December to April when it's drier and seas are calmer. May–November is cheaper but rainier and the boat rides can be rough. Expect to pay around $180–280 for a one-day tour and $350–550 per person for a two-day/one-night trip that includes transport, meals, and basic lodging. The multi-day version is almost always the smarter choice unless you're very short on time.
Tip: pick a smaller group tour (8–12 people max) that sleeps on a quieter island instead of the main party one if you want to actually rest. Skip the ultra-cheap options that pack 30 people onto one boat — you'll spend the whole day waiting for everyone else. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash for Kuna taxes and souvenirs, and a good waterproof bag for your phone and camera.
