Sandbank Snorkeling in the Maldives: Worth It?

You'll speedboat 30-60 minutes from your resort or Malé to a tiny exposed sandbar in the middle of the lagoon. The water is usually waist-to-chest deep and gin-clear, so snorkeling is easy even for beginners. Expect to see small reef fish, occasional turtles, rays, and the odd reef shark if you're lucky. The sandbank itself is just a sliver of white sand; you sunbathe, picnic, or swim between snorkel sessions. It's relaxed rather than adrenaline-filled – more like a private beach day than a serious dive trip. Tours usually last 3-5 hours and often include a sunset cruise back.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is excellent. June to November can still work but expect rougher rides, more swell, and reduced water clarity.
