The Santa Teresa tram ride is a genuine slice of old Rio. You board the rickety yellow bondinho in the city center, rumble over the towering Arcos da Lapa aqueduct, then climb through steep, narrow streets lined with crumbling mansions, street art, and bars. The views over downtown and the bay are excellent on clear days, but the ride itself is short – usually 15-20 minutes each way. Expect noise, wind, and standing room only at busy times. It's more atmospheric transport than thrill ride, and the neighborhood feels lived-in rather than polished.
Best time is the dry season (May to September) on weekday mornings when it's cooler and less crowded. Expect to pay around R$30-80 depending on whether you do it independently or as part of a half-day guided tour that includes walking through Lapa and the Selarón Steps. Independent tickets are cheapest but tours add context and save you from getting lost.
Tip: skip the overcrowded weekend afternoon runs and do the tram as the start of your day rather than the end. Pair it with a wander through Santa Teresa's cafes and galleries afterward – that's where the real pleasure lies. If you're short on time or energy, just ride it one way and take a taxi or Uber back down.
