Angra dos Reis Boat Tour: Worth It?

Expect a full day on the water (usually 6–8 hours) with multiple stops at small islands and beaches around Angra dos Reis. The scenery is genuinely impressive—clear green water, rocky islands covered in forest, and decent snorkeling at a few spots. Most tours include a simple lunch (often grilled fish, rice, beans) and stops for swimming. It’s a classic Costa Verde experience but it does involve a lot of boat time and can feel crowded on peak days. From Rio it’s a long ride each way; many people base themselves on Ilha Grande and join a smaller speedboat tour from Vila do Abraão instead.

Best time is the shoulder seasons (March–May or September–November) when the weather is usually stable and the sea is calmer. December–February brings more rain and rougher water, though it’s also busier and more expensive. Expect to pay around US$40–70 for a standard small-group tour with lunch and snorkel gear from Ilha Grande. Full-day trips leaving from Rio itself run US$80–130 including transport.

Tip: choose a smaller boat that leaves from Abraão if you can—it’s less rushed and the groups are usually smaller than the big buses from Rio. Skip the cheapest ultra-large tours that pack 50+ people and spend half the day in transit; you’ll enjoy the islands more if you’re not herded like cattle.
