Sauna Boat Tour in Stockholm: Worth It?

A sauna boat tour is exactly what it sounds like: you glide through Stockholm's waterways in a floating wood-fired sauna, sweating it out while watching the archipelago scenery, then step (or jump) straight into the Baltic Sea for a cold plunge. The experience usually lasts 1.5–2.5 hours and mixes relaxation with a proper Nordic contrast therapy hit. Expect temperatures around 70–90°C inside the sauna, shared benches with other passengers unless you book a private raft, and a simple changing area. It's genuinely fun and refreshing once you get past the initial shock of the cold water, but it's not a luxury spa day—think rustic, social, and occasionally crowded.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the water isn't brutally icy and daylight lasts longer. Summer evenings are popular; book ahead for weekends. Expect to pay around 1500–2800 SEK per person depending on group size, private vs shared, and whether drinks or snacks are included. Private rafts for small groups push toward the higher end.

Tip: choose a smaller traditional raft over the big party boats if you want a calmer, more authentic experience—skip anything marketed as a “floating nightclub.” Bring your own towel and flip-flops unless the operator provides them; most do, but quality varies. Go in with an open mind and a decent tolerance for heat and cold.
