Sausalito Ferry Bike Tour Guide

This is a straightforward half-day loop: rent a bike in San Francisco, ride across the Golden Gate Bridge (with its inevitable headwinds and crowds), coast down into Sausalito for lunch and people-watching, then catch the ferry back with your bike. The ride is about 8–10 miles mostly on a dedicated path, mostly downhill on the way out. Expect great views, a mix of serious cyclists and wobbly tourists, and a pleasant but not life-changing small-town vibe in Sausalito. The ferry ride back is relaxing and gives you a nice perspective on the bay, though it can get crowded on weekends.

Best time is late spring or early fall when it’s sunny but not scorching and the wind isn’t brutal. Summer weekends are busy and foggy mornings can ruin the views. Expect to pay around $60–110 total per person: bike rental for a few hours, one-way ferry ticket, plus food and drinks in Sausalito. Guided tours add another $40–70 if you want someone to handle logistics.

Tip: rent a decent hybrid or e-bike if hills worry you; the bridge approach has a long gradual climb. Skip the sit-down restaurants in Sausalito and just grab takeaway from the ferry terminal area instead—you’ll have more time to wander and the food is just as good. Bring layers; it can be 15 degrees colder on the bridge than in the city.
