Sea Cave Canoeing in Phuket: What You Need to Know

Expect a long-tail boat ride out into Phang Nga Bay followed by paddling through narrow sea caves (hongs) and limestone karsts. You'll glide into dark tunnels that open into hidden lagoons, often with mangroves and emerald water. It's peaceful once you're off the main boat, but the experience involves sharing the bay with other tours. Guides do most of the paddling on many trips; you sit in front and enjoy. Bioluminescent plankton tours at night add a glowing effect in the water, which is genuinely cool on calm evenings. The full experience usually lasts 6–8 hours including transfers from Phuket.

The best time is December to March when seas are calmest and rain is rare. Avoid July–October – the monsoon often cancels trips or makes the caves choppy and uncomfortable. Expect to pay around $120–180 per person for a decent small-group or semi-private tour that includes lunch, gear, and hotel pickup. Cheaper large-group options exist but feel more like cattle calls.

Pick a twilight or evening plankton tour if you want the magic without the midday heat and crowds. Skip anything that promises James Bond Island as the main event – it's usually packed with tourists and adds little to the cave experience. Bring waterproof shoes or sandals that stay on your feet; flip-flops always get lost in the caves.
