A 40–50 minute boat ride from Hout Bay takes you to Duiker Island (commonly called Seal Island), where hundreds of Cape fur seals lounge on the rocks, swim around the boat, and make an unbelievable amount of noise. The trip itself is straightforward: you head out, circle the island for 15–20 minutes while the skipper points things out, then return. It’s not a wildlife safari—expect smells, constant barking, and birds everywhere. On a good day the water is calm and you get great close-up views; on a choppy day it can be bouncy and some people get seasick. It’s a simple, fun outing that pairs well with a walk around Hout Bay harbour or fish and chips afterwards.
Best time is December to March when the sea is usually calmer and visibility is better. Expect to pay around ZAR 900–1,400 per adult depending on the operator and whether you choose a small fast boat or a larger one. Skip the glass-bottom boats if you’re prone to motion sickness; go for the open rigid inflatable boats instead—they get you closer and feel more engaging. Bring a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a camera with a zoom lens. If you’re short on time or easily seasick, you can safely skip it; the views from Chapman’s Peak Drive are often more memorable than the island itself.
